4 Best Ways To Comfort Yourself Emotionally
4 Ways To Comfort Yourself Emotionally
Sometimes our emotions need a check, because we get overwhelmed, or emotions come up and we just don’t know how to handle them. After all the anger or sadness or disgust fades, then most people just don’t know what to do with the big emotional hole that they have in their chest.
Well, after we’ve let out an outburst of emotion, we need to be able to provide comfort to ourselves and make sure that we’ve healed from whatever caused the outburst.
If you need four ways to comfort your emotions and self-soothe your spirit, then here are some things you can do.
-
Take A Few Long Deep Breaths
No matter what emotion we end up feeling, we often panic and take short breaths. Sometimes we might even hyperventilate and even have trouble breathing, so the best thing that can be done during any outburst of emotion is to take some slow deep breaths. Count to 5, in through the nose out through the mouth, focus on your breath and try to keep breathing slowly until you have calmed down.
You should notice your heart rate calming down, your shudders stopping, and your rollercoaster ride of emotions coming to an end. Keep breathing and maybe even repeat a mantra to yourself, until you come back down to Earth.

Counter The Bad Emotion With A Good One
After you’ve gotten angry, sad, or fearful, you want to start to feel happy again. If you ever get overwhelmed with emotion, you need to make sure that you are doing something to bring your emotions back up to baseline.
After all, it might feel needed to be upset and have an outburst, but you don’t need to wallow in that self-pity forever. So do something fun. Play a video game, watch a movie, hang out with a friend, or do something else that will at least get you out of the hole.
It might not make you very happy, but it certainly won’t make you feel worse! Just try to do something fun, and you will be in a much better place.
-
Talk To Someone
Often our emotions can get the best of us, and we can find ourselves spending too much time inside our own heads. The anger, resentment, and pain can just grow and grow until it becomes too much to bear. Rather than keeping it inside where it can grow, the best way to temper negative emotions and soothe your mental state is to talk to someone.
It can be a therapist or a friend but getting the emotions out into the air can be a great way to rob them of their power and let someone else know what is going on with you. They might have some insight you do not and can help you through the darker outbursts so you can start feeling better again.
-
Allow Yourself To Feel
This one might seem a bit odd, but often whenever we feel anger or sadness or fear, what do we do? We push it down, we ignore it, and we plaster on a happy face. This then allows those negative emotions to fester until we can’t take it anymore and explode into an outburst. Instead, allow yourself to feel the emotions.
Cry when you are sad, get angry whenever you are mad, and allow yourself to feel afraid. You don’t need to give into these emotions, but you do need to feel them and then let them pass. That’s the best way to deal with them in a healthy manner and comfort yourself.
